Your Needle weapon in Hollow Knight: Silksong is strong, but it could be a lot better. As you progress through this game, you’ll soon come across tougher enemies, such as The Last Judge, making them harder to take down.
Luckily, once you beat Widow and bring Bellhart back to its former glory, you’ll meet Pinmaster Plinney, someone who can upgrade your Needle once for free. But anytime after that, he’ll need Pale Oil to fix it. Here is how you can get Pale Oil for an upgraded Needle in Silksong.
Where to find Pale Oil in Silksong
The first Pale Oil upgrade you can find in Hollow Knight: Silksong is in the Whispering Vaults. To get here, you must head through Cogwork Core and parkour up to the top right exit that leads to a path you can open in the Choral Chambers. Keep heading right, and you’ll have to tackle a gauntlet with waves of enemies.
Complete the gauntlet, then continue through the Whispering Vaults until you make it to the main tower in the middle. There will be platforming and bugs along the way, but find the first exit on the left side of the tower. In the next room on the left, you’ll be in a puzzle room.
This room contains boxes fixed on tracks that you have to shuffle around in order to create paths. Here are the steps to this puzzle room:
Hit the box in the bottom-left corner.
Head through the gap you created and jump up to hit the box on the platform to your right.
Push the box on the floor to the right.
Jump on that box and wall jump up until you can hit the box above you.
Climb up on the right side until you reach the top, then push the box that’s in your way.
Walk up to the box you just pushed, then hit the box underneath you.
Jump down, then hit the long box on your left side.
Go underneath that box you just moved and hit it upwards.
Now, you can hit the lever you found, and it’ll take you to a room in the Choral Chambers with the Pale Oil. With that, you can head back to Bellhart and upgrade your Needle with the Pale Oil you found.
There are two other Pale Oils not involved with that quest, which we have not come across in our own games yet. What we have found is a ton of Mask Shards that you can use to upgrade your maximum health in Silksong.
