Microsoft calls 2017 The Year of the SCORPIO

Console gamers always look forward to the next generation of consoles to launch after roughly 6 years from the current versions release. As we continue to move forward with technology, the systems hardware and software gets a major upgrade and is sold as the next generation console. But it looks like Xbox creators Microsoft plan to change this.

Claiming 2017 to be The Year of the Scorpio is not a reference to it's release. In an interview with Aaron Greenburg, he stated that they aim for Scorpio to be the last Xbox console. This does not mean that they are going to stop development though. Instead, they plan to integrate the system used by PC and give major updates to the system every 1 to 3 years. Xbox Scorpio will also be made to be backward and forward compatible, making the need for players to purchase remakes another thing to put in the past.

While Greenburg stated that he is aware that this is a risky move, he believes that the Xbox Scorpio will be a great success. They also expect the Scorpio to be very durable and reliable, lasting several years as they have gone all out on the hardware and performance aspects.

My Opinion

I have to say that I think this is a very risky move and it is likely that not go as planned. While the idea of one console receiving updates is great, the aspect of the console that many like over PC is that it comes ready to go and does not require hardware updates for functioning. Updating a console to be up-to-date on pure software is not realistic. Using the PC style of updating will eventually require hardware updates for graphics, processing and other functionality aspects.

I wouldn't be surprised if Microsoft decides to make a second generation to the Scorpio 7-12 years later, but I am looking forward to seeing how well this idea plays out for Xbox and what kind of response the fan base audience will have to the system and this new concept.
