Capcom opened up The Game Awards with a new look at the Sunbreak, the upcoming expansion to their hit, monster-slaying game Monster Hunter Rise. Sunbreak will take players to a brand new location named Elgado, which features an original story featuring new characters and monsters in the Monster Hunter lore.
The trailer shows off a new monster that, through voice-over narration, is described as a beast that takes on its true form when bathed in the light of a full moon, not unlike a werewolf. When a Hunter tries to face down the beast, the woman providing the voice-over shoves him out of the way and claims “This is a royal matter.”
She then presumably dispatches the beast before the trailer cuts to the woman and the player character standing on the deck of a ship. She announces their intended destination is the outpost known as Elgado, a new island town distinct from the region in which the base Monster Hunter Rise experience takes place.
Sunbreak is the first major expansion Monster Hunter Rise has received and appears to follow in the footsteps of Monster Hunter World’s big expansion, Iceborne. Sunbreak, like Iceborne, looks to add new story content, characters, and monsters to the existing Monster Hunter Rise experience.
The trailer ends by confirming a Summer 2022 release window for the expansion. Monster Hunter Rise: Sunbreak will be available on the Nintendo Switch and PC via Steam.
