Mortal Shell 2: How to Beat the Nameless Captive

The Nameless Captive is one of the most brutal bosses you have to beat in Mortal Shell 2. After clearing out the Corrupted Gate in the southwestern region, you’ll come face to face with the Nameless Captive, a large man with a broadsword stabbed through his face. This boss is relentless with his attacks, so if you’re struggling against him, you’re not alone. Here’s how you can beat the Nameless Captive in Mortal Shell 2.

The Nameless Captive boss guide in Mortal Shell 2

When fighting the Nameless Captive in Mortal Shell 2, make sure to summon Eredrim and use a Shell that benefits from either keeping a distance from the boss or learning to dodge at the right moments.

It only costs one Glimpse to be able to permanently summon Eredrim, and he’s crucial in the first half of the fight to help take aggro off you and stagger the Nameless Captive. Getting a Riposte attack on this boss is quite difficult since parrying doesn’t fill the stagger bar by much, and he will continue his relentless attacks even after parrying, leaving you open to damage.

At the very start, I coated my weapon with Stasis while the Nameless Captive was focused on Eredrim. When inflicted, his movements would slow, giving me more time to dodge and get out of harm’s way. His sword swings are wide, so wait until he stops attacking to hit him, as he’ll likely hit you even if you think you’re out of his reach.

After you stagger him and make a Riposte attack, the Nameless Captive will always do a propeller attack where he swings it in a circle and goes toward either you or Eredrim. Run out of his reach if he’s coming toward you, because you won’t be able to avoid this attack otherwise.

Be careful when he stomps on the ground, because the attack he does right after is not able to be parried, and it will surely kill you in one swoop. He’ll also warn you of an unparryable attack when he leaps into the air to stab the ground. Dodge, then wait a second to dodge sideways again because he’ll pull the sword out of the ground and hurt you in the process.

I recommend using the Tiel or Genessa Shell against the Nameless Captive. As Tiel, you can Shadow Dodge and go invisible, giving you time to heal or step out of his attack range. Then, as Genessa, you can summon doubles and have them attack him to take aggro off you.

With all this in mind, you should eventually be able to defeat the Nameless Captive. As a reward, you’ll get the Captive’s Scabstone. This Tarstone only works with one weapon type, but it allows you to consume 100 Resolve to swing your weapon in an arc and strike anyone who’s close.

Mortal Shell 2 is available now on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.
