These days, between the generational gaps and changes, it can often be hard for some of us to feel connected to our parents. Well, Joseph Lam had an idea on how to bridge that gap and even create a game out of it.
Joseph is the co-founder of Parents Are Human, a card game that connects people from all over bilingually so that multicultural and/or immigrant families can have deeper conversations in order to create a stronger bond. He logged hundreds of hours asking his parents deep, emotional, and eye-opening questions with the mindset of giving its players the chance to not make the mistakes he’s made in the past.
“For the last few years, the most important priority in my life has been healing the broken relationship I had with my immigrant parents for more than a decade. I co-created Parents Are Human to get to know my mom and dad before it was too late.” - Joseph Lam
Parents Are Human is a card game where you have 70 increasingly deep questions and activities that will allow for each family member to getting a better understanding of how each generation feels. This game can be played face to face or virtually as well which is a plus during the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic.
With the game being bilingual there are many different editions to choose from. There’s English on one side of the card and on the other can be Chinese, Vietnamese, Spanish, Korean, or Tagalog depending on the version you purchase.
Each package of Parents Are Human includes:
1x Sturdy Two-Part Cardboard Box
4x Guide Cards & Translations (Yellow)
2x Vinyl Stickers
50x QUestion Cards & Translations (Blue)
20x Action Cards & Translations (Red)
The English edition of the game offers blank backings to the cards so that you can write in your own custom questions which is a pretty great way to open the door for even more dialogue. You could also use it to translate the game to any language you’d like as well.
Preorders for the Vietnamese, Spanish, Korean, Tagalog, and English language editions of Parents Are Human are available now via Kickstarter (shipping in November in time for the holidays).
The game ships all over the world but ships free in the US. Parents Are Human is also a Pay-What-You-Want which Jospeh states will “ensure these experiences are accessible to everyone”, which is a very cool thing to offer players.
Parents Are Human is available through their website and on Kickstarter.
