If your friend invited you on a road trip and told you you can play Xbox games in the backseat on the way up, chances are you’ll be all in. Microsoft is making that possible by partnering with LG Electronics to bring Xbox Cloud Gaming to internet-connected vehicles.
Vice President of Xbox Marketing Chris Lee wrote in a press release on Tuesday that Microsoft is developing a new Xbox app for cars that use LG's Automotive Content Platform (ACP), allowing passengers to stream games like Gears of War: Reloaded, Bugsnax, Mafia: The Old Country, and more on in-car screens from the backseat. This applies to Game Pass Ultimate subscribers who already own those games to begin with, but that doesn’t mean passengers who don’t have Game Pass can’t join in on the fun during a long road trip.
“Our work with LG is the latest example of Xbox expanding to new places, building on partnerships that already bring Xbox Cloud Gaming to mobile devices, PCs, and TVs,” Lee said. “By adding vehicles to the mix, we’re giving players more choice than ever in how they enjoy their games.”
The only caveat to streaming Xbox cloud games in an inter-connected car is that accessing the new Xbox app will be tied to an automotive data plan just like everything else in the ACP. If that’s the case, the friend who invited you on the road trip is going to be picking up the tab. But if they know how much you love gaming, especially while traveling, that shouldn’t be a problem.
