Inuyasha fans, rejoice! It has been announced by Anime News Network that there will be a sequel/spin-off series to Inuyasha that is expected to debut on Japanese TV in the Fall of 2020. The Inuyasha manga and anime was a massive hit in both Japan and abroad. The series played on Yomuri TV in Japan and ran from 2000 - 2004 with 167 episodes. The manga was published weekly in Shonen Sunday magazine from 1996 to 2008.
A lot of that momentum carried over to the United States; the English dub of Inuyasha had a very successful run on Cartoon Network’s [adult swim'] block running for 12 years, playing 6 years even after the dub had finished. The manga reprints are still produced to this day in the US in massive tankobons.
The new series is titled “Hanyō no Yashahime” (Half-Demon Princess Yashahime) and will feature the adventures of Sesshomaru and Inuyasha’s daughters traveling and having adventures battling demons. Inuyasha series creator Rumiko Takahashi provided designs for the new characters Towa, Setsuna and Moroha but aside from that, she will not be involved in writing or boarding the series; this series will not be based on a weekly manga, it will be produced at Sunrise with (an) original screenplay(s) by several staff members who had previously worked on the Inuyasha TV series.
Viz Media has picked up the streaming rights to the series and will localize it under the name Yashahime: Princess Half-Demon. An English dub has not been announced, nor has airtime on terrestrial TV been confirmed. This comes as little surprise for sharp-eyed viewers as Viz Media has historically distributed and localized English versions of TV series based on Rumiko Takakashi’s manga in the past such as Ranma 1/2, Inuyasha and Maison Ikkoku, not to mention the manga for all three series and the manga for other Takahashi comic works such as Urusei Yatsura and One-Pound Gospel.
What do you think? Are you excited? Are you dreading this? Should the series have been left alone? Let us know below!
