You’re a fairyless child no more, and you need to talk to a sentient tree that will put you on destiny’s path. Nothing can stop you; nothing will stand in your way. That is, of course, except for a fellow Kokiri boy who is running out of stuff to bully you with. Here is how to get the sword and shield in Kokiri Forest in The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time Remake.
How to get the Kokiri Sword in Ocarina of Time
As soon as you wake up from your slumber and talk to Navi and Saria, you might be inclined to walk straight to the Great Deku Tree. Unfortunately for you, this is not Breath of the Wild, and the path beyond is locked thanks to a very intense fellow called Mido. He will only grant you passage if you equip yourself with a sword and a shield.
To make things easier, focus on the sword first. The Kokiri Sword is stashed in a secret location in Kokiri Forest, located in the southwest corner of the map.
You can talk to the Kokiri boy for tips on moving while targeting. You can also choose to completely bypass him and just enter through the hidden passage right next to him on the wall.
On the other side, take a left, and you will find yourself in an Indiana Jones situation: a giant boulder will flatten you if you’re not careful. This trial of sorts is quite simple to complete: sprint counterclockwise and climb up the ladder on the opposite side of the area.
Walk toward the chest on the upper level and open it. You will now have the Kokiri Sword, your companion during your Young Link adventures.
How to get the Deku Shield in Ocarina of Time
With the sword in hand, it is time to do some Rupee farming. In total, you will need 40 Rupees to purchase the Deku Shield from the shop located in the northeast part of Kokiri Forest, right before entering the passage toward the Great Deku Tree.
This part of your journey is pretty simple: cut every bit of grass, grab and throw every rock, and break all pots in sight. With the Kokiri Sword, all of this is child’s play, quite literally.
Once you have all the necessary Rupees, head toward the shop and purchase a Deku Shield. Be wary that fire can quickly consume it, but you won’t have to worry about that until later.
Talk to Mido again, and he will move aside, opening the way to the Great Deku Tree, i.e., your first dungeon.
The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time Remake is available now, exclusively on Nintendo Switch 2.
