Top 5 Pokémon Spin-offs

2026 marks the 30th anniversary of the Pokémon franchise. While the tenth generation of the core series of games is on the horizon, there have always been more than the mainline turn-based RPGs to play. For some fans, it’s the treasure trove of fun spin-offs that have made the biggest impact on them.

With the recent release of the positively received Pokémon Pokopia, now seemed like a great time to put out a list of the Top 5 Pokémon Spin-offs. Five spots aren’t a lot, and some games don’t look as great without rose-tinted glasses. So let’s go down this personal list that I’m sure everyone will agree with.

5. Pokémon Unite

Those who focus on the core series are probably only aware of this title whenever it’s briefly mentioned in a Pokémon Presents. While it functionally is a mobile game (that’s also available on Nintendo Switch), complete with a cluttered menu and too many currencies, Pokémon Unite is certainly a fun MOBA.

This is mainly because of how truncated the game feels. A match is only ten minutes long, so it’s easy to jump in for a quick couple of games or grind a lot with just a couple of hours. Pokémon can also evolve throughout a match, letting earlier stages share the spotlight with their stronger forms.

However, the best part might be the costumes. Destroying the competition as a Firefighter Blastoise or a Chef Snorlax is very fun. No other game in this franchise will let you play as Hip-Hop Tyranitar with a sideways hat, and that’s a shame.

4. New Pokémon Snap

I’m well aware this might ruffle some feathers, so let me start by saying I have a fond memory of playing the original Pokémon Snap on a friend’s Nintendo 64. Seeing my favorite mons interact with each other in 3D and figuring out the various secrets made for an unforgettable afternoon of my childhood.

New Pokémon Snap is all of that, but with more mechanics, better visuals, and you won’t beat it in a single play session. Add all that with 200+ creatures to take photos of in some cozy atmospheres, and you have a delightful treat of a game. It isn’t perfect, but it’s exactly the kind of follow-up we’ve always wanted.

3. Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Rescue Team DX

If fans want anything, besides voice acting, it’s a decent story and to feel more connected with their trusty namesake pals. Nothing accomplishes this better than the Mystery Dungeon spin-off series, where you turn into a Pokémon. Fighting alongside them in dungeons and completing jobs makes for a special roguelike experience.

For those looking to jump into modern systems, your best bet is Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Rescue Team DX. This 2020 title is a remake of the first entries in the series, featuring modern improvements as well as additions like Mega forms and some shinies. The painting-like visuals are also a joy to look at.

It also helps that everybody looks adorable. This might not be Pokémon Unite-level of costumes, but it turns out that just adding some scarves will make a cute creature look even cuter.

2. Pokémon Go

Even if you lived under a rock in 2016, you should remember how huge Pokémon Go was. While some might dismiss it for not reaching the same mindshare as when it launched, it’s still plenty popular.

The game has seen overhauls and a slow introduction to the many gimmicks from the core series. I can confirm as an off-and-on player that it’s simultaneously better and more complicated than ever. A lesser title wouldn’t have survived this long, much less through the Covid pandemic.

Instead, this combo of juggernaut IP and casual gameplay has turned it into the great white whale of the AR game genre. If you live or happen to be visiting a bigger city, take a moment to people-watch. You might be surprised how many are spinning their fingers on their phones.

1. Pokémon Pokopia

You know what happens when a game has seemingly adequate development time, a team that is masters of their genre, and ideas that firmly match what a lot of fans want? You get the damn near perfect Pokémon Pokopia.

It’s charming and melancholic. Creative and cozy. Funny, but more than capable of pulling on the heartstrings. I’ve barely put time into it, yet I can tell there is something special here. The palpable excitement is absolutely warranted, even if you’re not into the genre or Pokémon itself.

And hey, if you’re playing this excellent spin-off, make sure you check out our Pokémon Pokopia guides hub.

Pokémon Pokopia is easily the best spin-off for the franchise, but you can’t go wrong with the others. Whether you want to kill the time before Pokémon Winds and Pokémon Waves next year, or just want to treat yourself, diving into the world through these spin-offs is a great idea.
