There’s a condensed version of the video at the bottom of this article for those that have to rush through life, but if you have the time, you should really watch the entire video to see how the team at Epic Games is bringing Unreal Engine 5 to life with some remarkable new technologies.
The engine is going to help artists and developers reach a new level of game creation and visual splendor with detail and environmental interaction like we’ve never seen before.
Unreal Engine 5 utilizes film-quality assets in video games, and it shows.
Brian Karis, Technical Director of Graphics, and Jerome Platteaux, Special Projects Art Director, discuss "Lumen in the Land of Nanite"—a demonstration of two core technologies that work in Unreal Engine 5.
First is Lumen, described as “a fully dynamic global illumination solution that immediately reacts to scene and light changes.”
Then Nanite, which is “virtualized micropolygon geometry.”
These are the two major players in the UE5. But there are also other features like Niagara VFX improvements, Chaos physics and destruction, and more.
If you don’t work in the industry, these technologies and the upgraded assets in the engine may not sound like anything special. But these are some substantial advancements. If you don’t believe me, just watch the footage.
It’s… unreal.
