Beginner Tips For Octopath Traveler 0

Jumping into Octopath Traveler 0 for the first time can be daunting, not just because of the game’s length, but because it’s the third main entry in the series. If you’re an expert in all things Octopath, you may find yourself breezing through the beginning, but not everyone has played this series before.

If you’re like me and Octopath Traveler 0 is your first Octopath game, you’re not alone. The game can throw a lot at you at once, while also hiding some important information from you. To help you out, here are some tips and tricks for Octopath Traveler 0.

Use Path Actions with every NPC

In most major and minor towns in Octopath Traveler 0, you’ll find a slew of NPCs you can interact with. Specifically, you can use Path Actions on them for a myriad of benefits. You can Inquire to learn more, Invite them to your town, Contend to challenge them in battle for rewards, Entreat to receive items for free, and Recruit to hire them.

Although many of these Path Actions lead to free items, use them with caution, as every NPC has a different success rate. If it’s 100%, you don’t need to worry. But anything below 70% may hinder your town’s reputation if you fail. Luckily, most NPCs you come across have high success rates, so check every town for NPCs and their Path Actions.

Bounce between quests

Although it may seem enticing to simply follow one questline after choosing between Wealth, Fame, and Power, you should alternate between quests for the most optimal experience. This is mainly due to the fact that the main three quests start with low level requirements, so if you complete a full quest and start the other, you may find yourself way too overleveled.

Also, the level requirement for the next chapters will increase, so if the next chapter requires a higher level, try a different quest. By the time you’re done with a lower-level quest, you’ll be ready to tackle the higher-level one.

Eat a meal before big fights

One of the best mechanics in Octopath Traveler 0 is the ability to cook meals and eat them before fights. Different meals will grant you unique benefits for a certain number of turns during fights.

You don’t have to eat something before every single fight, but before tackling an Elite Enemy or fighting a difficult boss, check your meals and see what buffs they offer. Once you unlock the tavern at Wishvale, you can cook your own meals.

Don’t forget about Wishvale

Speaking of Wishvale, you don’t want to forget about building up your town while you’re hunting down the main three antagonists. Take a break once in a while to tackle the Rekindling the Flame questline. Building houses allows you to invite more people to your town who can passively earn you items.

You’ll soon also unlock places like the Fields and the Ranch, which can grant you food, and the Church leads you to unlocking those mysterious blue chests you find around the world. You can also decorate your town as you please, so feel free to stop by from time to time to tend to it.

Understand the Boost system

I was several hours into Octopath Traveler 0 when I finally learned the full potential that the Boost system offers. In combat, your party members earn a Boost point each turn. You can use Boost points to upgrade skills to increase their damage, but if it’s a skill that grants a buff, the Boost can increase the number of turns the buff stays for. There’s a lot more to Boost points than you think, so use them wisely.

Now that you’ve learned about this game’s best tips for beginners, you should also know the best starting job in Octopath Traveler 0.
