Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds is racing around the corner, and the open beta test will be running throughout Labor Day weekend. From its announcement at The Game Awards 2024 to now, there have been a handful of updates regarding what Sonic fans should expect from what is shaping up to be the best racing game of the year.

If you’re a major fan of the Sonic racing games, or if this will be your first time playing one, here’s everything you need to know about Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds before you jump behind the wheel.

When is the Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds release date?

Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds will officially launch on September 25, 2025. We’re not exactly sure what time of day Sega will release the game at. However, we do know that the free open beta test for Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds starts at midnight EST on August 29.

What platforms will Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds be on?

Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds will be available on PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, and PC (via Epic Games and Steam). The Nintendo Switch 2 version will be available at a later date, most likely during the holiday season.

How much does Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds cost?

The cost of Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds depends on the version you plan to get. The standard edition will run you $69.99, while the Digital Deluxe Edition costs $89.99. The collector’s edition from Limited Run Games costs $250, but it has currently sold out.

How many racers are in Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds?

Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds' roster is massive, sporting a total of 37 characters announced so far.

The Sonic universe characters include Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, Amy Rose, Shadow, Rouge, Omega, Dr. Eggman, Cream, Big, Espio, Vector, Charmy, Jet, Wave, Storm, Blaze, Silver, Sage, Egg Pawn, Metal Sonic, Zavok, and Zazz.

But it doesn't stop there. To live up to its name, Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds is bringing in three guest characters from other Sega properties at launch: Hatsune Miku, Joker from Persona 5, and Kasuga Ichiban from the Yakuza: Like A Dragon series.

Then, there's Sonic the Werehog (pre-order bonus); Minecraft’s Steve, Alex, and Creeper; SpongeBob and Patrick; Pac-Man and the ghosts (Blinky, Pinky, Inky, and Clyde); and Rusty Rose, Nine, and Dread from Sonic Prime.

Sega may have some additional secrets up its sleeve, so we'll have to wait and see.

How many tracks does Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds have?

There are 15 regular tracks and eight CrossWorlds tracks. More tracks will be added to Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds at a later date.

Are the DLC Characters in Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds voiced?

All the DLC characters in Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds are mute except for Hatsune Miku. Sonic Team head Takashi Iizuka said in an interview with Destructoid that the purpose of not having those characters voiced is to save the companies that own them the headache of a long approval process.

Does Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds have a story mode?

Unfortunately, Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds doesn’t have a story mode. Although a storyline was written into Team Sonic Racing, Sega decided not to add a story mode this time.
