With Remedy Entertainment preparing to launch Control Resonant in September, it's a good time to look back at where the studio's supernatural universe started and how it has grown to be this interconnected monster.
The seemingly isolated events that began with Alan Wake have now been folded into a world where an entire city is under siege by these invading extra-dimensional entities. Here’s how Control Resonant connects to the 16-year journey of the Remedy Connected Universe.
Alan Wake (2010)
The story began small, following a writer, Alan Wake, stuck in the small town of Bright Falls as a dark presence literally takes it over. At the time, it felt like a standalone psychological thriller. However, it did well to give us a glimpse at how these alternate realities could seep into ours.
Control (2019)
It was with Control that Remedy made the events of Alan Wake almost into a small blip in the wider universe of paranormal events that keep happening everywhere. The Federal Bureau of Control was set up as a secret government agency in charge of containing and studying these phenomena, all done within the almost sentient Oldest House building.
With many more nightmares to contain, Jesse Faden enters the fray as the new director of this facility, armed with her own supernatural powers to beat back the forces that continue their invasion plans.
Control AWE Expansion (2020)
Not content with just letting players come across reports of the Bright Falls incident, Remedy brought together the Alan Wake and Control stories in this expansion. With Wake acting as a guide, Faden was battling enemies and forces that were pretty familiar from the events that happened 10 years ago.
This wasn't just a crossover made to make fans giddy, as it also showed what could happen when two major supernatural forces merged together. We even got to see how time isn't that linear anymore when it comes to these events, with another Bright Falls incident being reported before it even happens.
Alan Wake 2 (2023)
Remedy was in a roll now, delivering the long-anticipated Alan Wake sequel that also expanded its supernatural reality even further. Here, players got to see firsthand what happens when an entity grows too large for a localized takedown, blurring the line between the Dark Place and our reality.
However, it's the game's The Lake House expansion that set the stage for a much bigger invasion. A hidden teaser confirmed that The Oldest House has gone dark for four years now, and something big has escaped into the world.
Control Resonant (2026)
The alternate universes of Remedy have made their presence known in our world in larger and larger ways over the years. But all of those pale in comparison to Control Resonant, which is set to move past the small-town or secret government building settings and get us into a version of downtown Manhattan that has been taken over completely by an extradimensional entity.
Looking back at that 2010 launch, it is staggering to see just how far Remedy and its universe have evolved. What began as a desperate writer in the sleepy, isolated setting of Bright Falls has evolved into a full-blown, reality-warping urban crisis. It's almost hard to imagine where the Remedy Connected Universe will go after this venture.
Control Resonant is out on September 24, 2026, across PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.
