My Hero Academia Moves Forward With Superhero-Expert Screenwriter

No one asked for another live-action adaptation of a popular anime, but for reasons known only to the Universe, we’re getting it anyway — with a screenwriter that has a history penning superhero movies. The live-action adaptation of My Hero Academia, which is being produced developed by Netflix and Legendary, has found its screenwriter in Jason Fuchs.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Fuchs has been picked to write the script for My Hero Academia, helmed by Bleach and Kingdom director Shinsuke Sato. If you’re wondering what superhero movies Fuchs was involved in, he penned two of them: Wonder Woman, the first DC superhero movie with a female director, Patty Jenkins, and Argyille.

Legendary announced that My Hero Academia was being adapted into a live-action film in 2018, on the heels of the live-action Death Note streaming on Netflix the year before. Despite that film receiving mixed to negative reviews, the streaming platform announced it acquired the rights to the My Hero Academia film in 2022.

Although the My Hero Acaedmia live-action film is knee-deep into production, we still have to ask, “Is this really necessary?” It’s one thing to deal with live-action remakes of our favorite Disney animated movies, but live-action remakes of anime like One Piece, Avatar: The Last Airbender, and now One Piece feels sacrilegious. It reinforces the idea that animation, including anime, is a medium meant only for children to enjoy and not adults.
