The 2022 Game Awards were last night and you can find our article on the winners here, but there were some awesome announcements made as well! One of the big announcements was Ascendant Studio’s big collaboration with EA Originals to create the groundbreaking new single-player, first-person magic shooter Immortals of Aveum.
So what do we know about Immortals of Aveum? Well, the game is set in an original fantasy universe engulfed in magic, rife with conflict, and on the verge of oblivion. Immortals of Aveum will be Ascendant Studios’ debut title and is a completely new IP that is being developed by industry veterans that were behind beloved games like Dead Space, Call of Duty, BioShock, and Halo. Together, Ascendant Studios claims they are “boldly re-imagining the future of big-budget, AAA video game development and defying what we’ve come to expect from first-person shooters.”
While not much else is known about Immortals of Aveum, I for one am incredibly excited about magic and fantasy-themed first-person shooter. One of the few hang-ups I have about the announcement is of course EA Original’s role as publisher. Ascendant Studio’s website makes a point of claiming they are “An independent AAA video game studio with ownership and creative control over our original IP.” A game being involved with EA these days is almost never a good sign, especially when it comes to creative control or game design. The last thing we need is another AAA game with bucket loads of predatory micro-transactions, and to me, that is a big worry when I hear ‘EA’. At the moment however we can only wait and see, all I’ll say is that I can’t wait to see how Ascendant Studios develops this amazing premise of a game going forward.
Immortals of Aveum will release on the PlayStation®5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC at a currently unknown date in 2023.
