Survival MMOs have been around for quite some time and have always captivated players with their promise to deliver a true survival experience. Day Z started off as a mod for Arma 3 and eventually grew into the mixed-reviewed behemoth we know today. H1Z1 Just Survive was another great take on the genre but unfortunately couldn’t maintain players’ attention and the servers shut down in October of 2018.
With the likes of Battle Royales taking over the “massive multiplayer” genre, survival MMOs always seem to draw major fascination amongst players and there is a calling for a good one. Something fresh and worth sinking hours into with some friends. FNTASTIC Is pushing its own boundaries by bringing us its biggest game yet, The Day Before.
Nvidia has revealed some new 4k gameplay for The Day Before in a showcase for its GeForce RTX graphics cards. The brief one-minute video clip shows off some stunning visuals for the upcoming title and while revealing some new gameplay footage of exploration and combat. We can only see some basic shooting and a variety of environments showcased in the video.
It revealed some more footage of the city streets during the day as well as some exploration in a heavily wooded forest area. It concludes with a mall location which I assume will be one of the many indoor areas the game will allow players to explore. It seemed like the last encounter had the player shooting at other survivors, which could indicate one of the first looks at PVP gameplay.
The Day Before is aiming to be the new survival MMO king on the block. Players can expect to explore, scavenge, and fight to survive in a zombie-infected world. The game looks stunning with its breathtaking visuals and atmosphere. I have to say, even as a fan of this genre, I am skeptical and I need to see more before I am convinced. The gameplay doesn’t look bad but it is looking very generic. I’m curious to see how in-depth the gameplay gets, specifically with combat and exploration.
I am hoping this won’t be just another Division-Esque third-person shooter. Give me some solid melee combat and crafting system. Give me skill trees and character customization. Give players a reason to get back into this genre and make it count. I am concerned about how “alive” the world will feel.
Post-apocalyptic games tend to have massive maps but they are empty with not much filler in-between areas. Much of the time is taken up by running around aimlessly looking for something to do. Hopefully, The Day Before can address some of these concerns before it launches on June 21, 2022.
