The beauty of game preservation is that even after multiple generations have passed, a fresh set of eyes can discover something brilliant that we may never have known before. It saddens me to see some great retro titles become lost or nearly unplayable without the original console to play them. Luckily, Metal Gear Solid has had a decent attempt to keep it in modern libraries of gamers and thus we are gifted with golden nuggets such as this one.
Speedrunners are fantastic detectives when it comes to unexpected discoveries in games. They play the same levels over and over again until they land that flawless run, then they do it again to beat the time. Metal Gear Solid Speedrunner, PlatonicGuy, had recently discovered you can control the guards in one of the final moments in Metal Gear Solid’s chase sequence. It occurs shortly after Otacon, or Meryl, races through the tunnels with Snake on the turret, blasting their way through for a heroic escape.
You can see in the video that the guards that show up at the gate are completely controlled by the second controller, allowing the player to complete the section without a scratch. Although this may have very simplistic controls over the guards, it’s still a neat find nonetheless. It’s intriguing to find these bugs and glitches years after the release of the game and gives fans something to hunt for.
