In the early hours of the morning for American fans, CD Projekt Red dropped a bombshell announcement that nobody saw coming quite so suddenly: The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is getting a third expansion, titled Songs of the Past. While rumors had been swirling for months, the shadow drop of the official announcement, complete with a new logo, start a flurry of guesswork for Witcher fans. Details are scarce for now, with CDPR confirming only that more information will be released in late summer 2026, but what little we know is already enough to set pulses racing.
What we do know is that Songs of the Past is being co-developed by CDPR and Fool's Theory, a studio with deep roots in the Witcher universe. Fool's Theory, the team behind The Thaumaturge, is also currently at work on the long-awaited remake of the original Witcher game, making them a natural and trusted partner for this project. The expansion will return players to the role of Geralt of Rivia for a brand new adventure, launching in 2027 on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. That the expansion is coming at all is remarkable as this marksGeralt's first new story content since Blood and Wine back in 2016.
The sheer audacity of releasing a new expansion for a game that launched in 2015 is part of what makes this announcement so surreal and thrilling in equal measure. Twelve years after its original release, The Witcher 3 remains one of the most beloved RPGs ever made, with over 60 million copies sold and more than 250 Game of the Year awards to its name, so perhaps it should come as no surprise that CDPR is returning to that well one more time. The 2027 release window stings a little for the impatient among us, but the chance to ride alongside Geralt one more time before the torch is passed to a new generation of Witcher games is absolutely worth the wait.
