The inventory size in Hytale seems pretty big when you’re just loading up on Plant Fiber and sticks, but it won’t take long for it to be filled with all manner of different blocks and flowers. Fortunately, all it takes to start increasing your inventory size is a backpack.
That’s not to say the steps to unlock a backpack and access it are obvious. We’ve got you covered with how to use this equipment as well as upgrade it for even more inventory space.
How to Unlock a Backpack in Hytale
When Hytale launched, unlocking a backpack was a long and grindy process. The first major update has streamlined most of that. Whereas before you needed a Tier 2 Workbench to craft the “Unlock Backpack” consumable under the Tinkering tab, now it can be done with a basic Tier 1 Workbench.
The recipe requires 8 Iron Ingots and 8 Medium Leather, which is half the amount of Leather needed before the update. Crafting it doesn’t automatically provide the extra space, and instead adds the Unlock Backpack item to your inventory.
Move it to the hotbar, where it will look like a white sheet of paper in your hands. Use it to enable the backpack with a nine-space capacity. A notification should pop up on the left that says “Your backpack capacity has now increased to 9!”
The extra row of spaces isn’t just added on top of your existing set. You’ll instead need to open your inventory, look at your equipment screen on the left, and click on the now-unlocked Toggle Backpack button. It sits beneath the Toggle Collected Memories Button. This displays a separate inventory for you to swap items around.
How to Upgrade the Backpack in Hytale
If you desire even more space, you’ll be happy to know that the Backpack can be upgraded two times. The first one has also been made a lot easier to access, only requiring a Tier 2 Workbench instead of a Tier 3. A Tier 2 Workbench requires 30 Copper Ingots, 20 Iron Ingots, and 20 Linen Scraps.
This improved Workbench can craft the Backpack Upgrade I recipe, which needs 40 Cindercloth Scraps, 8 Cobalt Ingots, and 24 Heavy Leather. Cindercloth Scraps are dropped by Skeletal enemies in the Devastated Lands biome, Cobalt Ingots can be found in the Whisperfrost Frontiers biome, and Heavy Leather can be looted from the strongest mobs of each zone.
Crafting this upgrade provides a consumable just like before. Equip and use it to add nine additional spaces. Having a second row of Backpack inventory will go a long way to ensure you have space for repair kits and food to tame horses alike.
Backpack Upgrade II is where things get complicated. The recipe isn’t revealed until you submit 100 Collected Memories to the Altar inside the Forbidden Gateway. Even then, you would need a Tier 3 Workbench to craft it.
That’s a lot of work, but the primary issue is that Backpack Upgrade II requires 1 Voidheart, 8 Adamantite Ingots, and 16 Storm Leather. Those who have been trying to get Mithril items likely already know that Storm Leather does not naturally drop in Exploration yet.
These can be added to your inventory within Creative mode, or you can bypass the grinding and directly drop the Backpack Upgrade II consumable into your inventory. You will need to wait for a future update to obtain this upgrade the intended way.
Hytale is available now on PC.
